I have to admit I haven’t explored YSL beauty products much. A year ago I tried their Fusion Ink Cushion Foundation and began to fall in love with the product. However, I have never been a fan of high-end products due to its expensive price and I can get pretty much same results with other affordable products. However, as my mother and my friends say, there’s nothing wrong to try a luxury product once in a while. So when I found out that YSL came up with YSL Tatouage Couture Matte Stains, I was out of my mind.
I began to see the hype on the Internet months ago on Youtube and instagram. Many influencers and the so-called beauty gurus praised about it and oh my...I told myself, it would be great if I could get my hands on it.
Then my research began and I wasn’t surprised when I found out that the product retailed for Rp 575,000 or $ 41 (quite expensive considering that it only contains 5 ml of liquid). However, the heart wants what it wants and I didn’t regret my decision to purchase it.
So let’s get some basic expectations set. First, this is a lip stain, with a matte finish. Yes, it’s not a liquid lipstick and I thank God for that because liquid lipsticks can get pretty dry and uncomfortable to wear despite its longevity and its opaqueness.
If you have dry lips, any lipsticks with matte finish probably won’t do you good. If you have a lot of texture in your lips to start with, like lots of deep lines, then any matte lipstick will emphasize them. However, if you really want to try it out, don’t forget to exfoliate your lips for a smoother application and end results.
These YSL Tatouage Matte Stains apply like water and it smells good. They go on like light liquid but still easy to control. One thing I like about this product is that it comes with paddle shaped applicator, which allows us to shape our lips with precision. That makes the spreading out of the products easier and evenly on the lips.
The stain can be layered for a more opaque finish. Bold colors like 01 Rouge Tatouage and 03 Rose Ink go on opaque of the first wipes, while others need several applications to built on. I have tried the 03 Black Red Code before but since I am getting old I feel like bold color might not be suitable for me so I opt for something nude instead. Mine is the 23 Singular Taupe.
I have to say, choosing nude color lipsticks for my skin tone is a hassle. Lots of nude lipsticks out there have an orange undertone, which makes my face looks darker and dull. Luckily, the YSL stains edition comes with many color ranges. For the one I purchase, it has brown and pink undertone, which goes perfectly with my skin color.
YSL Tatouage comes with 22 different colors ranges from Neutrals and Mauves, Red and Corals to Pink and Plum.
So here are my observations:
The lip stains do set after a while. There is some play time, like blending and diffusing the edges with ease but after a couple of minutes, they set comfortably matte.
They don’t shrink or feel uncomfortable on the lips because of its thin and soft texture.
I also tried putting my lip balm before the application but the result won’t be as good as it is without. They don’t set completely and there’s still a bit of slip. I won’t recommend you to apply lip balm before applying the product but if you find your lips dry, add a bit more lip-gloss for classy touch after the application.
It doesn’t transfer. There are reasons why many of us require new lipsticks or stains to pass the coffee cup test and I am glad to say that the product works on that.
For the ombre lips fans. This will be great news for you because the product blends really well with any type of lipsticks. I love to put it as a base to stain my lips and put another lipstick on top of it. As the lipstick fades, the YSL Tatouage under the lipstick leaves the stain behind and makes my lips look healthy.
The product lasts 5 to 8 hours depending on the food we eat. Coffee Cup is not a problem but if you enjoy greasy food like gorengan and nasi goreng you might want to re-apply the products to add the pigment. If you don’t mind to reapply it, then this product is good for you.
It is pricy. So make sure that you plan ahead before you purchase it.
